Hello, I'm Amazon and here's what I think you should be reading, human

Amazon has started furnishing me with "John's Reading List". There's literally no part of my life they're not trying to invade like some sort of tick.

Let's see how they do.

Rick Stein's French Odyssey. Well, I do like French food, and I do like cooking. And the Prince of Padstein is total buffoon, wandering around markets in a linen shirt and panama, failing to understand any French, and constantly going on about "pimenton". But his recipes are pretty easy to follow and I'm far from an intuitive cook. Susan can cook. I can follow a recipe. So, okay.

BFI Film Classics: Hanyo (The Housemaid). Yeah. I like films. Well done, Amazon. You got me.

33 1/3 John Cale's Paris 1919. Yeah. I like records. Well done, Amazon. You got me.

A Gaston Lagaffe album translated into English by, I think, Fantagraphics Press, where they've renamed him Gomer Goof for the American audience. This one is called Goof Off at Gomer Coral. Which isn't very good, is it?

This is not a bad pick. I'm a massive fan of Franquin's artwork and, like Rick Stein, my French is negligible, so it's would be nice to finally be able to read these stories in some sort of translation. I'm probably not going to buy these though, which I've cleverly deduced is what this list is for, tricky Ol' Amazon, get your hands out of my pockets. But this, at least, is a pretty good effort. It's not obvious. Clever little algorithms.

The Palm House by Gwendoline Riley. It has what looks like a Bill Brandt photo of some legs on the cover. I'm never going to read that. Sorry Gwen.

I mean, I've just bought Rick Stein's Secret France. So asking me if I want to buy a book by Rick Stein about French cuisine was a bit route one, if I'm honest lads, and I have several books in the 33 1/3 and BFI Film Classics series, so that's not much of a stretch either. I have no interest in The Palm House, so that's a swing and a miss. But yes, Gomer Goof was a good call. Though I'll be buying The Mansion of The Gods before I start on Franquin. Goscinny and Uderzo true-fan.
